Hello,

I've been doing a bit of recording and when trying to blend my recording of my saxophone in with a pre-recorded backing track I'm having to use a bit of EQ to bring up the top end and take out some of the middle and bass.

I'm a bit of a purist at heart and so don't feel it's good to be using too much EQ to fix something that may be a consequence of bad mic-ing technique or just poor personal saxophone tone! I've done a screen grab of the EQ and I'd be grateful if anyone could cast their eye over it and say if they think it's excessive and an indication of another problem.

I'm playing a tenor sax, the Mic is a LC set to omni and about 2.5 feet away.

All the best,

Chris

It occured to me that room acoustics might be playing a large part in the tone I was achieving which was mid-range heavy and woolly. I've just done another test recording and had the mic much closer, 6-8 inches and a quick initial comparison suggest a lot of my EQ work on the previous recording was trying to correct for the room tone!

That makes total sense. It may work well to be close mc'd, and then put some of the same but quite small (e.g less than 1.2 seconds) room reverb on both you and the BT. This would help make it sound like it's in the same room even though it obviously isn't.

So you won't be then be trying to use EQ so much to get everything sounding in the same space.

Thanks Pete, I'd not thought to put a small room reverb over the whole thing. I've got a long and short reverb on on two different buses for the sax track, but I'll play around with a final (short) one for the whole mix.

All the best,

Chris
