COMPOSITION STUDENTS’ WORK

From 2000- to 2002 I taught composition at the University of Southampton. I designed and developed a new course in commercial composition, with an emphasis on creativity and originality as well as the skills reqired to get your music out into the marketplace and learn how to deal with clients, i.e. a realistic approach to media and artistic composition.

It is unfortunate that although there are some very good further education courses in writing fil, tv and other media music, many are not geared towards nurturing creativity. I resigned in 2002.

Below are examples of undergraduate students’ composition portfolios, showing a wide range of influences including jazz, blues, classical, indie and folk. These are music students who graduated between 2000 and 2002. The emphasis of the course was on a balance between the creative and practical: students were encouraged to compose from the heart, but always with a view to a future career as a professional or continuation of their studies at postgraduate level.

Evan Jolly went on to win a coveted place at the National Film & Television School.
